Left Wing, Right Wing. They’re All Assholes.

You know what I hate about social media?  All the political agendas and know it all crap as people “share”  articles they read.  I find myself severely irritated by all these sudden political activists out there.

And I find myself irritated because it’s really trendy to be an NDP supporter in Canada these days.  The left wing for you non-Canadians out there.

Personally,  I have found myself swinging more and more to the right these days.  Odd for a musician, isn’t it?  But I’ll tell you why in typical rant style, rather than a fact based argument.  (I’m no political activist.)

It’s not that I don’t think that people have rights and have a voice.  It’s not that I don’t believe that all Canadians, shit, all people have the right to expect a standard of education, health care and living wage.  Believe me, I have had some stupid experiences with the health care system that make me want to rant and rave about lack of care, lack of funding and overall inefficiency.  I believe in all of these things.  It’s part of what makes Canada a great place to live.

But here’s the thing.  In this shit-ass world economy, where all sorts of countries are facing bail-outs and total fucking economic disasters, Canada has weathered the storm better than most.  Now before your panties get all tied up, I didn’t say no one faced hardship.  They certainly did.  Auto sector anyone?

And why do you think that is?  Because that asshole Harper has done a lot of fiscal management that pisses people off.  There have been funding cuts and budget tightening.  And yeah.  It sucks.  Especially if you’re on the chopping block.

Today people seem to be pissing their loads all over Facebook because of some budget amendment bill.  I haven’t read that far into it, but it sounds like the government plans to take more control over collective bargaining and the CBC will lose some autonomy.  My first reaction was so what?  It’s a government funded corporation.  Shouldn’t they have some influence over how the funds they dish out are then allocated?  Maybe I’m missing the point, but if I give you 80 million dollars, and you get all pissy because I want to have some say in how it gets used, I’d probably tell you to go fuck yourself.  But I’m not Prime Minister.  Lucky Canada.

Anyway.  There is a new balance that needs to be set.  The bottom line is that when money gets tight, we have to tighten our belts.  We have had the luxury of living entitled lives here in Canada.  You get used to all sorts of things, but at the end of the day, someone has to pay for it.  And that someone is you and me.

We are getting a 1% tax hike in our provincial sales tax and people are annoyed about it.  Now I don’t want to pay more in tax either, but seriously.  Where the hell is the money supposed to come from?  From us.  We want the programs.  We want grants and funding and access to everything for “free”.  But the money has to come from somewhere and it isn’t trees.

The world has decided to spend its way out of debt.  We do that in our households, we’re doing it in our governments.  Yikes.

And interestingly enough, the shift in political support seems somewhat generational.  The younger generation has become very left wing in my observation.  Is it a symptom of us blurring the line between want and need?  Between need to have and nice to have?

I mean, I like a lot of social programs too.  I love Parks.  I love Interpreters in parks.  I used to be an interpreter for God’s sake.  But if I had a choice between having an Interpreter in a park and a doctor at the ER, I think I’d probably choose the doctor.  And I think that’s where we’re at.  There is only so much money to go around, and we need totake care of fundamentals first.

It isn’t pretty, but I think it’s necessary.  And if Harper is such an asshole, how did he end up with a majority government?  Please start enlightening me with your stories of corruption and robocalls now.

So please continue to hate the Conservatives.  Please continue to publicize pictures of Prime Ministers with Pandas or whatever he’s done to ruin Canada today.  He’s a politician.  Which makes him an asshole.  Whatever.  They ALL are.
